If VBox is not allowing you to choose the drive in your home folder, eject the external drive from macOS and then it should let you. This method only works with computers that have legacy BIOS enabled. Most recent computers that have EFI boot mode like Mac from late or newer will not be able to see the hard disk at startup and will not allow you to boot from it because when Windows was installed, there was not EFI partition created.
