When ordering this I was worried the build quality might be really cheap but as soon as I took it out of the box them worries went away. Although obviously not a high end product it does seem surprisingly sturdy and I was also surprised by it’s weight, which was more than I had expected.

So far it has been reasonably easy to set up and start using although mapping out every knob and button will still take some figuring out. Other than the necessary tinkering I haven’t yet come across any sizeable cons. On the pro side, it’s easy to use, quick to set up and obviously a nice compact size.

One notable pro is the fact it does not require drivers to function so if you have no internet connection or simply can’t be bothered searching for drivers you don’t need to worry. That being said there are some customization features that will be missing without drivers. In summary: Only getting started with this but so far so good. Great value for money. It comes with high quality, thick plastic overlays for most of the big software companies that can be laid over the top of the unit and by selecting your native software, the buttons will match what the template says.

There is a template for Reaper and on day 1, I removed the 3M sticky backing for the template and stuck it to the X-Touch.

On day 2, I pried the template back off and chucked it Im still trying to get all the sticky stuff off the unit. The reason? Because the button functions and locations for different software packages are chosen for you and are unchangeable that I can tell. The unit is laid out very intelligently. Since most of us use a right-handed mouse, this looks to have been designed to use with your left hand. With the Faderport, I had to make room on my desk to rest my hand in range of the transport buttons.

I saw some complaints about the function buttons being small and square. The Faderport on the other hand, went for aesthetics instead and has oddly shaped transport buttons that stay lit all the time. The problem with that is since there is no symmetry to the layout, I had to waste time feeling around the unit to be able to tell what button I was touching or worse, take my eyes off the computer screen to waste more time looking at the unit to ensure I pressed the correct button.

Granted the record button is hugely important- for a portion of the process. Then it may never be used again on a project. Why do I want it shining in my face day after day? The X-Touch knob is in the upper left corner intelligently out of the way. The Faderport has the knob right smack in the middle of the unit. Its oversized and clunky to work with. This means your fingers constantly bump the knob and you have to waste time working around it. Maybe those folks should have been stuck trying to use the Faderport first- which has absolutely no feedback at all.

It will show 6 characters at a time. So just adapt the way you label the tracks so the LED display will make some sense to you if you want to use it.

No one would expect you to use the handful of lights that display the volume level on the X-Touch as an accurate way to set a track volume. I see these 2 features in a different way- a quick way for you to confirm that the track you selected is the correct track and also to confirm that particular track is outputting sound- nothing more.

Do you know what the Faderport uses to confirm what track you are on and its volume output- nothing. While Im on the subject, at the top of the X-Touch there is a display that you can change to your liking at the push of a button.

This display shows among other things, the timing of the song in minutes and seconds. The great part about this display is that its not backlit like the tiny LED screen. This means the numbers can be clearly seen at any angle and any light condition. Why is that cool? Because along with the transport buttons, this usable display means I was able to remove the transport bar and buttons view off the computer screen completely which has freed up even more space on the computer screen to work with.

Granted the numbers are Pumkin Orange. The rest of the year, meh. Another cool thing is the way the cords attach to the unit. In the pic you see the cords leaving the Faderport are spaced out along the back of the unit. That means you can put another piece of gear right up to the X-Touch like in this pic if you have a small desk area to work in.

The fader moves with the slightest touch and has been absolutely perfect so far. In fact, as the fader gets used and worn in- it takes even less finger pressure to move it in even smaller volume increments. I wanted a control surface that allowed me to retire using the keyboard to make music. I envisioned my left hand on the control surface and my right on the mouse and between the programmable function keys and the intelligent layout of the control surface, I could do everything I needed.

Aside from naming tracks and files or special functions that are done only with the keyboard- this will do just that. There are some things that I think could be improved on for the X-Touch.
